About Poison Control Center Erfurt

The Chemicals Act obliges the federal states to designate information and treatment centers for poisonings, which collect and evaluate knowledge about the health effects of hazardous substances or preparations and provide assistance with substance-related illnesses through advice and treatment.

The Joint Poison Information Center (GGIZ) fulfills the tasks of the poison control center for the participating states on the basis of an administrative agreement.

It was established in January 1994 at the Medical University of Erfurt and continued at the HELIOS Klinikum after its transformation. The GGIZ's task is to provide assistance 24 hours a day in cases of acute and chronic poisonings and their sequelae in humans.

Where possible, cases of poisoning in animals are also advised on. Advice is provided to all citizens, doctors, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, as well as to authorities and institutions dealing with toxicological issues.

Knowledge about poisonings is documented and published. The GGIZ works closely with other poison information and treatment centers, the Society for Clinical Toxicology and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. Since April 2004, night duty has been carried out in daily rotation together with the GIZ-Nord (Göttingen).
